Radiohead

Radiohead is a British rock band. Formed in the 1980s at a school in Oxfordshire, they were heavily influenced by American bands such as The Pixies and R.E.M. Their debut single 'Creep' (1992) was a large success in America in particular.
By 2011, they had sold over 30 million albums worldwide, and recieved awards such as 6 Grammys and 4 Ivor Novello awards. Seven of their songs have reached the top 10 on the UK Singles charts.
They were inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019, and have been named in the Billboard list of the top 100 Artists of All Time.
Jonny Greenwood said Radiohead strive to find a middle ground between their experimental influences and rock music, and were driven by a desire not to repeat themselves rather than to be "experimental" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiohead)
Their song 'Kid A' (2000) is said to have pioneered the use of the internet to stream and promote music. Radiohead's 7th studio album, 'In Rainbows' (2007) was a pay-as-you-like album, meaning fans could pre-order the MP3 version for any amount of money, including £0. This is credited as a major step for music distribution and helped forge the path for unconventional album releases online ahead of artists such as Beyonce and Drake.

Lil Nas X

Lil Nas X (Montero Lamar Hill) is an independant American artist. His name combines Lil (used by many rappers) 'Nas' (referencing the rapper Nas) and 'X' for the number of years he believed it would take for him to be famous. Hits include 'Old Town Road', 'Industry Baby' and 'Sun Goes Down', a personal tune featured on the album 'Montero'.
He dropped out of University (West Georgia, where he studied Computer Science) to pursue his love for music.
Lil Nas X's first single was Old Town Road, a song he formulated individually. He bought a beat online for $30 and posted it on Soundcloud in 2018. The song then began trending on Tiktok in 2019, enabling him to reach the Billboard charts. The country-trap song made it to the Hot Country Songs list but was removed by Billboard because it 'did not embrace enough elements of today's country music.' Nevertheless, in 2019 the song hit No.1 on the Billboard's Hot 100, and with multiple remixes it stayed there for 19 weeks.
'Sun Goes Down' is a self-acceptance song featuring a cameo from the artist's father, R.L. Stafford, of whom was not originally accepting of his son's coming out. The rapper came out as gay in 2019, and the song carries messages of hope to his younger self. He believed that coming out was a way of moving forward with his career, of which his younger self would not agree with.

Shelter Short Film

I chose to look at the Renters Reform Bill short film because it directly represents the charity as a promotional outsider pressure group. This is through their campaigning directly outside of Parliament aiming to make a difference and directly calling out MPs who were delaying the Bill because it would not benefit them as a landlord. It is an incredibly eye-opening film due to this.
The charity is presented as altruistic through its concern for the well-being of people all around the country, emphasised through the facts and figures used throughout the physical campaign and film.

Media Magazine article summary

'The best media job in the world?' an interview with BBC Head of Film Steve Jenkins

This interview focuses on the ability to buy and schedule films on satellite TV, specifically on BBC1, BBC2, BBC3 and BBC4. In order to show a film on your broadcasting channel, it must be bought in a bidding war. Jenkins discusses how, despite the increase in channels, bidding wars are not as large as they used to be. The BBC's main competitor -  Channel 4 - is much better than the BBC at advertisement, which means that despite the bidding wars for the rights to a film, Channel 4 is remembered for its specific titles shown, even if the BBC showed them first. Scheduling has quite a large role in this. A film is scheduled to a particular time slot on a particular channel (1,2,3 or 4) based on the intended audience and how the channel intend the film to be received. For example, a popular film such as Shrek or The Sound of Music would do better in a prime evening slot and a more niche film would have a better reception in a mid afternoon slot
