Planning: Summation of Findings

 Key Codes and Conventions:

  • Two shot:
    • I will use this in my video, however not as frequently as many pop ballads videos use this style of shot. This is largely due to the centre of my narrative being based around one person, and challenging the stereotypical break-up pop ballad.

  • Surrealist elements:
    • I will definitely use this, along with intertextuality of the Hunger Games bow. I intend to use flying pieces of paper, taking inspiration from Taylor Swift's 'Fortnight' music video. Additionally, the use of burning paper will add to this convention in pop ballads.

  • Close ups of the artist/band:
    • This convention I will use most frequently in my video, as a lot of the narrative focuses on facial expressions and gesture codes.

  • Louder, Emotive Chorus:
    • This convention of a pop ballad is highly reflective in LABOUR - the cacophony, therefore complying with the definition of a pop ballad.

Challenging Codes and Conventions:

LABOUR - the cacophony is not the stereotypical pop ballad. How will this challenge the codes and conventions of a traditional pop ballad?

  • Faster paced:
    • This song is a lot more up tempo than traditional, slow paced pop ballads. I intend to create a more complex narrative that develops and shows raw emotion.

  • Not about a break up:
    • 'LABOUR - the cacophony' criticises the work of the patriarchy in their treatment of women through history. Therefore, the idea of love and romance will be absent in this video, and instead will focus on rebellion and breaking from social norms and gender performativity (Butler) that society has taught women and girls to act as.

Conforming to Codes and Conventions:

  • Two shot:
    • My video will still consist of a few two shots, however will be rarer than strictly conventional pop ballads.

  • Louder, Emotive Chorus:
    • The chorus of the song I have chosen allows the audience to experience Hannah's raw emotion and aggressive gesture codes.

Planning: Posters/Newspaper - Intertextuality

RESOURCES FOR THE VIDEO

I made this newspaper cover for the indoor dinner table scenes. Its name, 'The Cacophony' refers to the version of the song that this video contains. Intertextuality with 'Society is Watching You' refers to George Orwell's novel '1984', through the idea of Big Brother. The copy in each column are the lyrics to the song 'Labour'.

This poster will be used in the opening sequence in a close up of it plastered to a tree. The protagonist sees this and rips it off the tree, putting it in her basket. Later on, multiple of them are used, surrounding the protagonist, who proceeds to burn one in defiance.
